about

Sonotant is the experimental electroacoustic music project of Masako Yokouchi, where organic soundscapes are crafted from field recordings and unconventional sonic sources. The music blends acoustic instrument recordings with digital audio and improvisational elements to offer a calming yet intriguing listening experience.

Her compositions are often inspired by the serenity and beauty found in the natural sounds of urban environments and the surrounding landscapes. Her creative process moves fluidly between the ambient and the depths of human consciousness, transforming fleeting moments into something deeply resonant.

Drawing from a diverse musical journey, Masako’s background spans classical piano and cello, free improvisation with accordion and keyboard, and early exposure to Japanese music and jazz. This eclectic foundation shapes her multifaceted approach to composition.

In addition to her music, she teaches piano, music theory, and electronic music production to both children and adults,
and is currently a piano instructor at the Preparatory Center for the Performing Arts at  Brooklyn College, City University of New York.
